KRUJE

Capital of Tradition and Skanderbeg!

Castle of Krujë

The Krujë castle is a castle in the city of Krujë, Albania and the centre of Skanderbeg's rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. Inside the castle is the Teqe of Dollme of the Bektashi, the National Skanderbeg Museum, the remains of the Fatih Sultan Mehmed mosque and its minaret, an ethnographic museum and a Turkish bath.

The Albanian people are identified with the history of Krujë Castle. This castle is one of the most visited places in Albania. Within the fortress is located one of the main attractions, the National Museum "George Castroti Skanderbeg" (Muzeu Kombetar "Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu" in Albanian). This museum was built in early 1980s by architects Pranvera Masha and Pirro Vaso. Inside the museum there are exposed a lot of original bibliography, documents, objects and authentic reproductions that represent the history of Albanian people in the fifteenth century. This museum has become an icon of the city's skyline.

During the Albanian Revolt of 1432-1436 the city was unsuccessfully besieged by Andrea Thopia and Ottoman rule was restored. After Skanderbeg's rebellion in 1443 the castle withstood three massive sieges from the Turks

respectively in 1450, 1466 and 1467 with garrisons usually no larger than 2,000-3,000 men under Skanderbeg's command. Mehmed II "The Conqueror" himself could not break the castle's small defenses until 1478, 10 years after the death of Skanderbeg.

Today it is a centre of tourism in Albania, and a source of inspiration to Albanians. Krujë Castle is situated at an elevation of 557 metres (1,827 ft). Among the ruins within the castle walls stands the Old Clock Tower, with the same bell that once rung to announce the death of Skanderbeg. This clock, crafted by artisans of the Old Bazaar of Krujë, once coordinated the city’s time, such as the opening and closing hours of the shops, as well as the times of prayer.

Near the clock tower stands the National Museum “Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu”, designed by Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha, part of the architectural team who designed the Pyramid of Tirana. Built in the early 1980s, crowning the castle walls, this recognisable museum structure has become an icon of this city’s skyline. Inside, the exhibits reveal insights into Skanderbeg’s life, his historical victories and achievements, as well as copies of Skanderbeg’s weapons: his recognisable helmet crowned with a goat’s head, and his sword.

National Museum "George Castrioti Skanderbeg"

The National Museum "George Castrioti Skanderbeg", also known as the Skanderbeg Museum or the Kruja Museum, located in Krujë and is one of the most important and visited museums in Albania. The museum was built at the end of the 70's and was inaugurated on 1 November 1982. Its architecture was designed by architects Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha. Construction works were realized by a local team managed by Robert Kote.

The museum has the character of a memorial, architecturally inspired by traditional Albanian stone towers and medieval Romanesque architecture. The name of the museum is in the honour of the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbej. The Krujë Castle, which houses the museum, is a historic citadel. Ottoman troops attacked it thrice, in 1450, 1466 and 1467, but failed to take control. It was this impregnable fortress that helped George Kastrioti Skanderbeg defend Albania from the Ottoman invasion for more than two decades.

The museum contains objects dating back to Skanderbeg's time. The exhibits have been arranged in a way that chronicles his life and military feats. Paintings, armor, and other artifacts dating back to his time have been exhibited to showcase one of the proudest periods

of Albanian history. An interesting display is the replica of the hero's famous goat head-topped helmet, the original of which is on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Labelling the Skanderbeg Museum a national treasure, as it is, doesn’t come close to describing its national significance. Ever since opening in 1982, this Kruja landmark has been one of the most visited places in the country. This monument represents a grand collaboration of experts in all fields, including a team of renowned Albanian architects, led by Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha. They drew inspiration from the conceptual platform devised by Aleks Buda, then chair of the Academy of Sciences of Albania. Teams led by the renowned historian Kristo Frashëri and talented Albanian painter Bashkim Ahmeti, also contributed to this large-scale project. Originally conceived as a memorial, its architecture seamlessly synchronises with history and the medieval arts. The museum has a beautiful impact on Kruja’s skyline, whilst also blending in with the landscape. It also adds a contemporary flair to the medieval Castle of Kruja.

Ethnographic Museum of Krujë

The National Ethnographic Museum in Krujë presents the story of Albanian customs and traditions throughout the centuries, and thanks to the captivating guide of this museum. Built during the mid-18th century, in 1764, by Ismail Pashë Toptani, this Ottoman house is considered one of the most unique museums in Albania. It includes a total of 15 rooms which tell of work and family life in the town of Krujë. A white, three-story construction with a tower placed in the middle, this house is surrounded by wood-carved windows of all sizes, letting the breeze flow freely in an out, and creating a pleasant sense of open space.

Outside, you’ll notice traces of former springs surrounding the castle, from which the name of the city derives (the word for “springs” in Albanian is kroje), which also reflect the city’s former position as an agricultural centre prior to the rise of commerce and artisanal activities.

The museum is part of the ancient Castle of Kruja, and is specifically located within its fortified courtyard. The exhibition begins in the house’s work yard, which contains centuries-old baking ovens, bee hives made of stone, houses for dogs and chickens, and many more traditional

household curiosities. All the objects in the museum are original. On the ground floor you’ll see traditional farming tools, some used in the old craft of leather processing, and many used in the traditional cultivation of olives and olive oil. Kruja has a long tradition of olive cultivation and olive oil processing, that goes all the way back to the legendary Skanderbeg’s time in the 15th century.

The second floor is dedicated to the exhibition of family life, and is certainly one the most fascinating parts of the tour! It’s here where our lovely guide usually reaches the peak of his gripping storytelling. First, we have the women’s room which includes what Albanians refer to as paja, a collection of specially-made items that a young woman preserves for her future marriage – often including sheets, table covers, ornaments, and other such items. The women’s room demonstrates the tradition of hospitality, as well as their traditional role of humbly serving the heads of the household. A completely different atmosphere is found in the men’s room, which is decorated with swords and rifles. Women observed the men’s activities through small windows in order to ensure they were not lacking in food or drinks, and were only allowed to enter it to serve them. A curious tradition that, though now is certainly considered a thing of the past, has left its mark on the lives of Albanians.

The Krujë Bazaar

The Krujë Bazaar is famous for being one of the oldest in Albania. The construction of the beautiful and fascinating marketplace of Krujë dates back over 400 years and was the starting point of free trade among the city’s most established merchants. It is in this bazaar that traders first began to officially exchange various kinds of goods with one another.

Conveniently located on the main road leading to the Castle of Krujë, the space forms part of the museum while also serving its traditional commercial purpose. Whether you need a traditionally crafted rug, or masterfully made copper products from the renowned craftsmen who work here, you can find every object of interest you might need! Other items in the fascinating bazaar include genuine handcrafted items, and silver jewellery that is known to last a lifetime.

The bazaar has steadily grown over the centuries, dictating the spread of housing and urban structures around it, making it the real epicentre of Krujë. The nearby, Bazaar Mosque, also known as Murad Bey mosque, is a historic mosque in Krujë, Albania. It was built in 1533 and is a Cultural Monument of Albania today. Built in Ottoman

Qafshtama National Park

Qafshtame National Park resides in the edge of the mountain chain north of Tirana, about 25 kilometers east of Kruja. The park is named after the Qafë-Shtamë passage, and has an area of 2000 hectares, with a beautiful mountain scenery consisting mainly of pine forests, some small lakes and major water sources. The national park was established in 1996 by the Albanian government. It is becoming lately a popular attraction for hiking.

The park's name translates as pass Shtama. The road from Kruja to Burrel, runs through the park, on an altitude about 1250 meters. The most significant source of water is called Kroi i Nenës Mbretëreshë (Source of the Queen Mother), known for its clean, clear and healthy water. The legend refers to the Albanian Royal Family, allegedly daily supply from this water source would be after of a laboratory in Vienna had awarded it as the best water in the country in 1932 by performing laboratory tests.

The word Queen Mother probably points at Sadije Toptani, the mother of Ahmet Zogu, or Geraldine Apponyis, his wife, who had first visited Albania in 1937. Nena
